University of Georgia fraternity suspended after racist video circulates online

A University of Georgia fraternity has been suspended after a video that appeared to show its members using racial slurs and mocking slavery began circulating on social media over the weekend.

The video appears to show one student slapping another with a belt while saying “pick my cotton” followed by a racial slur. The University’s Student Government Association released a letter to the student body Friday saying that it is aware of the video.

“We have been notified that the chapter is currently suspended, and we can confirm that there is an investigation underway regarding the students involved in the video,” the statement read.

Tau Kappa Epsilon, identified by social-media users as the fraternity involved in the incident, said it had expelled the four members in the video

“Tau Kappa Epsilon is disgusted, appalled and angered by the remarks shown in a video of four expelled members,” according to a statement from the fraternity. “TKE will not tolerate any actions such as these that would be defined as racist, discriminatory, and/or offensive.”

The fraternity said it launched an investigation and found the incident did not take place during a TKE function or on any chapter premises.

The University also released a statement saying it condemns racism “in the strongest terms.”

“Racism has no place on our campus. We will continue our efforts to promote a welcoming and supportive learning environment for our students, faculty and staff,” the statement read. “Whenever we receive complaints of racist or discriminatory conduct, we refer such matters to our Equal Opportunity Office in accordance with applicable laws and policies.”
